The genocide Olympics

Elizabeth Krantz - 26 June 2008

How can any person sit in a Beijing stadium with a clear conscience while Tibetan jails overflow and monks and nuns are routinely tortured and murdered  by the same regime that is using the Olympics to gain world respectability?

Since invading Tibet in 1949, the brutal Chinese regime has embarked on a policy of genocide in Tibet. Reports filtering out of Tibet over the years testify to years of repression, destruction of monasteries and mass murder of monks and nuns.

According to freeTIBET, the 1949 Chinese invasion and subsequent occupation of Tibet has resulted in the deaths of over one million Tibetans, the destruction of over 6,000 monasteries, nunneries and temples, and the imprisonment and torture of thousands of Tibetans.

At a recent  rally, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama attacked China's human rights record accusing it of  "unimaginable and gross violations" in his Himalayan homeland.

The Dalai Lama told hundreds of flag-waving supporters on the 49th anniversary of his escape to India after the abortive anti-China uprising, "repression continues  to increase with numerous, unimaginable and gross violations of human rights, denial of religious freedom and politicisation of religious issues".

Monks forced to pay for their own brainwashing

Following demonstrations that flared in Tibetan towns and monasteries the Chinese government, in a scenario reminiscent of Stalin and Pol Pot, has launched a program to "re-educate" monks in effort to break their spirit and their allegiance to the Dalai Lama. To add insult to injury, the monks have to pay for master texts on "patriotic education" while armed paramilitary units guard access to the main monasteries.

Rudd to attend opening ceremony

In spite of his rhetoric on Tibetan human rights, Prime minister Rudd announced this week he will attend the Beijing opening ceremony. Obviously his desire to strut the world stage overcame any principles he may have had in relation to the Tibetan genocide.

"How many of these are you sending to re-educate the Tibetan monks?"

What can be done?

In addition to making your feelings known to Rudd, you can lobby the main sponsors of the genocide Olympics, some of which appear opposite. McDonald's logo is particularly inappropriate.

Rudd would gain some credibility if he lobbied all world leaders to boycott the opening ceremony.
